Nonlocality and the critical Reynolds numbers of the minimum state magnetohydrodynamic turbulence

چکیده
Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) systems can be strongly nonlinear (turbulent) when their kinetic and magnetic Reynolds numbers are high, as is the case in many astrophysical and space plasma flows. Unfortunately these high Reynolds numbers are typically much greater than those currently attainable in numerical simulations of MHD turbulence. A natural question to ask is how can researchers be sure that their simulations have reproduced all of the most influential physics of the flows and magnetic fields? In this paper, a metric is defined to indicate whether the necessary physics of interest has been captured. It is found that current computing resources will typically not be sufficient to achieve this minimum state metric. VC 2011 American Institute of Physics. [doi:10.1063/1.3606473]

Magnetohydrodynamic mixed convection effects on the removal process of fluid particles from an open cavity in a horizontal channel
This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the heat transfer performance and the removal process of fluid particles under the influence of magnetohydrodynamic mixed convection in a horizontal channel with an open cavity. The bottom wall of the cavity is heated at a constant temperature (Th) while the top wall of the channel is maintained at a relatively low temperature (Tc). Air wi...
متن کاملSimulation of Low Reynolds Number Isotropic Turbulence Including the Passive Scalar
Full simulations of homogeneous isotropic turbulence containing a homogeneous passive scalar were made at low Reynolds numbers and various Prandtl numbers. The results show that the spectral behavior of the two fields are quite similar; both fields decay as power-law functions of time. However. the decay exponent is quite dependent on both the Reynolds and Prandtl numbers. The decay exponent of...
متن کاملEffects of variations in magnetic Reynolds number on magnetic field distribution in electrically conducting fluid under magnetohydrodynamic natural convection
In this study the effect of magnetic Reynolds number variation on magnetic distribution of natural convection heat transfer in an enclosure is numerically investigated. The geometry is a two dimensional enclosure which the left wall is hot, the right wall is cold and the top and bottom walls are adiabatic. Fluid is molten sodium with Pr=0.01 and natural convection heat transfer for Rayleigh num...
متن کاملParametric study of a viscoelastic RANS turbulence model in the fully developed channel flow
One of the newest of viscoelastic RANS turbulence models for drag reducing channel flow with polymer additives is studied in different flow and rheological properties. In this model, finitely extensible nonlinear elastic-Peterlin (FENE-P) constitutive model is used to describe the viscoelastic effect of polymer solution and turbulence model is developed in the k-ϵ-(ν^2 ) ̅-f framework. The geome...
متن کاملMultiscaling in Models of Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
From a numerical study of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations we show, for the first time in three dimensions sd 3d, that velocity and magnetic-field structure functions exhibit multiscaling, extended self-similarity (ESS), and generalized extended self-similarity (GESS). We propose a new shell model for homogeneous and isotropic MHD turbulence, which preserves all the invariants of ideal...
